Charlie Watts - words & music by Kenny Hogan © copyright 2/3/2010 Ynnek Nagoh Productions
When Charlie Watts gets behind the drum set, He knows he's got a job to do, The backbone of the Rollin stones, Been on the job since 62,
Charlie might be gettin older, Yeah, but you can hardly tell, Cuz Charlie Watts is still a Rock & Roller, Bashin, crashin, and givin it hell! Yeah, He's Charlie Watts! Charlie Watts yeah yeah! Charlie Watts! He's a Rollin' Stone, He's a metronome, He just keeps on rockin' Keeps on rollin', rollin' on...
He don't need no giant drum set, a thousand cymbals all over the place, He looks at Keith, he looks at Ronnie, He 's got that big smirk on his face,
Yeah, He does that thing with his hi hat, Yeah, He does that thing with his sticks, The Wembley Whammer, hits like a hammer, And he don't take no shit from Mick!
Yeah, he's Charlie Watts! Charlie Watts yeah yeah! Charlie Watts! He's a Rollin' stone, He's a metronome, He just keeps on rockin' Keeps on rollin', rollin' on...
Charlie Watts stands behind his drum set, Waves to the crowd and then he looks around, He doesn't swagger, he doesn't stagger, He looks at Jagger, & he counts it down,
Playin' simple, playin' solid, Just as solid as a Georgia pine, Knows how to rock it, deep in the pocket, And he'll be rockin' till the end of time,
He's Charlie Watts! Charlie Watts yeah! Charlie Watts!
Yeah he's Rollin Stone, Down to his bones. The man knows how to rock & Roll... Charlie Watts yeah yeah!
Go Charlie Go! Go Charlie Go! Go Charlie Go! Go Charlie Go!

Charlie Watts Quotes:
When I was a kid I never learned to play. I actually got in bands through watching people play
and copying them.
Charlie Watts
When people talk about the '60s I never think that was me there. It was me and I was in it, but I
was never enamoured with all that. It's supposed to be sex and drugs and rock and roll and I'm
not really like that. I've never really seen the Rolling Stones as anything.
Charlie Watts
I hate leaving home. I love what I do, but I'd love to go home every night.
Charlie Watts
I'm very strict with my packing and have everything in its right place. I never change a rule. I
hardly use anything in the hotel room. I wheel my own wardrobe in and that's it.
Charlie Watts
We always work at least a month to six weeks before we go on the road, usually for something
like eight to 12 hours a night. It took six weeks to do it this time. We just play virtually everything
we know.
Charlie Watts
You'd imagine Mick would be the happiest person in the world, and yet a lot of the times he isn't.
Charlie Watts
Mick's not good on his own problems, but he's very good at other people's. He's been wonderful
over the years. I don't mean I ring him up every week, but he's fantastic.
Charlie Watts
I don't need to hear Bill to go through a song. I need to hear Keith to go through a song. I know
Bill will be playing what I'm playing anyway. I need to hear Keith because it's all there: the time,
the chord changes, and all the licks you have to follow.
Charlie Watts
I've seen Keith fall asleep at business meetings about millions of dollars for him-because of
heroin, just nod out and then wake up and answer a question.
Charlie Watts
I never had lessons. Used to try to play to records, which I hated doing. Still can't play to them.
Charlie Watts
I wanted to play drums because I fell in love with the glitter and the lights, but it wasn't about
adulation. It was being up there playing.
Charlie Watts
It doesn't really change, actually. I think The Rolling Stones have gotten a lot better. An awful lot
better, I think. A lot of people don't, but I think they have, and to me that's gratifying. It's worth it.
Charlie Watts
It's been years and years and years I've been playing the drums, and they're still a challenge. I
still enjoy using drumsticks and a snare drum.
Charlie Watts
People say I play real loud. I don't, actually. I'm recorded loud and a lot of that is because we
have good engineers. Mick knows what a good drum sound is as well, so that's part of the
illusion really. I can't play loud.
Charlie Watts
Rock and roll has probably given more than it's taken.
Charlie Watts

Charlie Watts - (born June 2nd,
1941) is an English drummer best
known as a member of The
Rolling Stones.
He is a jazz bandleader, record
producer, commercial artist and
horse breeder.
Mick Jagger sometimes refers to
Watts as "The Wembley
Whammer" when introducing him
during concerts.
On October 14, 1964, Watts
married Shirley Ann Shepherd,
whom he had met before the band
became successful; they are still
together.
My favorite Charlie Watts Story:
During the mid-1980s, an intoxicated Mick Jagger phoned Watts's hotel room in the
middle of the night asking "Where's my drummer?"
Watts reportedly got up, shaved, dressed in a suit, put on a tie and freshly shined
shoes, descended the stairs and punched Jagger in the face, saying: "Don't ever call
me your drummer again. You're my f*cking singer!"

"With age, what you learn most is doing what you do even better. That doesn`t mean Louis
Armstrong at 70 was better than Louis Armstrong at 20. But he did get Louis Armstrong across
better. And the same is true of the Stones.
It must seem strange that we do the same thing with the same boys all these years later. It
seems strange to me.
But it`s like when you get drunk at a bar and wonder later how you got home. You know
where you are - you`re home - but how did you get there? That`s the mystery."
"Playing the drums was all I
was ever interested in. The
rest of it made me cringe.
The girls only really loved
Mick, Brian and Keith anyway."
