Summertime Samba - Kenny Hogan    ©2007

Soft and warm,
a summer breeze is calling me,
Sun shines on,
shining diamonds on the sea,
Seagulls cry as the tide rolls in,
I'm so glad you're with me
and it's summertime again,

Summertime, summertime,
Life is good, I'm feelin' fine,
Not a worry on my mind,
Happy just to be here
in the sweet sweet summertime

Close your eyes,
feel the sunshine on your face,
Feels so nice,
lost in summer's warm embrace,
Soft and warm,
you hold my hand,
And we walk together
all along the golden sand

Summertime, summertime,
Life is good, I'm feelin' fine,
Not a worry on my mind,
Happy just to be here in the sweet sweet
summertime

Time rolls like an endless ocean,
flowing to eternity,
Dreams shine like the lonely lighthouse,
beaming out upon the sea,
Love is like the burning sun
that's shining on our summer days,
We are castles in the sand,
waiting to be washed away...

Setting sun,
mirrored on a peaceful bay,
Day is done,
on a song I drift away,
Soft and warm,
you call my name,
It's the perfect ending
to a perfect summer day

Summertime, summertime,
Life is good, I'm feelin' fine,
Not a worry on my mind,

Happy just to be here
in the sweet sweet summertime

Happy just to be here
in the sweet sweet summertime

Happy just to be here
in the sweet sweet summertime
This song was originally written in 1979, up in Plattsburg
New York, at a band house on Lake Champlain. It was
left unfinished for many years, but I often toyed around
with the guitar parts whenever I had an acoustic guitar
in my hands.
Last year the chorus came to me while we were on
vacation on the ocean in Cape Ann, near Gloucester
Mass, and the bridge of the song was written in May of
2007 after a visit to York Beach In Maine.

In other words, it took 28 years to finish!
What can I say? I work slow!

I don't really know if "rockers" will like it... It's such an
odd duck. I never thought I would come up with a Bossa
Nova song, but sometimes these ideas just rattle
around in my head, and for some strange reason, this
song seemed to
want to be born.

I love the ocean, and I live for the summer, so I just
wanted to paint a picture of a beach using words and
music. I tried my best.

I hope or hoped that the song would be something to
listen to while on vacation or driving near the ocean,  or
maybe sitting in a lawn chair at the beach with your feet
in the sand, and a cool drink in your hand.

On this song I used a Variax guitar for the acoustic
sounds, a Fender Telecaster electric guitar, a Fender
Bass, Kawaii synthesizer, sang many overdubbed
vocals, and played claves, shakers and other electronic
percussion.

Many thanks to Frank Sarcia for his expert advice on
samba and Bossa Rhythms.
Many thanks also to my friend Jim Zaroulis who played
piano on this one.

HAVE A GREAT SUMMER! YOU ONLY GET SO MANY
SUMMERS IN A LIFETIME! ENJOY YOURSELF!
