I'll Be There For You - Kenny Hogan

If you're ever feeling down,
and your world is blue,
You can always come to me,
and I'll be there for you,

I'll be there for you,
I'll be there for you,
if you ever need someone,
I'll be there for you,

And if you ever
need to talk,
I
will lend an ear,
Even if you need to cry,
Well I got this shoulder here

And I'll be there for you,
I'll be there for you,
if you ever need someone,
I'll be there for you,

And if your world started crumbling down,
With nothing but trouble as far as you can see,
and it feels like you got no one,
At least you'll know you
have me

I sat down and I wrote this song so you'd keep these words in
mind,
And that way, someday, when I'm gone,
I can leave this song behind,

And I'll be there for you,
still be there for you,
if you ever need someone,
I'll be there for you
,

Always, and forever more,
I'll be there for you
This song is dedicated to my son Kenny, and for all parents everywhere.
How this song evolved:

Originally I recorded this song with nothing
but acoustic guitar and vocals.
I liked the song, but not the recording.
In my head, I always heard it with mandolin
in the mix.
Eventually I acquired a mandolin from my
friend Randy "big Daddy" Breton, and
added that.
Thanks Randy!

All that tinkly stuff in the high frequencies
made me wish it had bass on there too, so I
added bass to the track.
That, of course, made me realize that
percussion was needed to give it a
heartbeat and some pulse.
I turned to my good friend Frank "the
Emperor Bolo" Sarcia who suggested
adding a shaker, some cymbals, and a
small hand drum. It was subtle and tasty,
and really added a nice spice to the stew.
I was very impressed with Frank's
contribution.
Still, something was missing and it bugged
me.
One morning I woke up and I realized that
some backing vocals would add a church
choir effect. I recorded a simple three part
vocal harmony. I liked the sound of it, and
over-dubbed the three parts four times,
and ended up bouncing all 12 tracks
together, ping-ponging the tracks until I got
all 12 vocals onto one track. Not an easy
task on an 8 track recorder.
So I ended up with 13 of me singing on
what was once a very simple song.

Finally I liked the recording, and I'm very
happy with it.
